Birthday Candles

I purchased 2 Betty Crocker birthday candles at Meijer in Woodhaven, MI.

Birthday CandleThese are the numerical candles, a number 8, and, a number zero. I read the sign on the item display at $1.19 each. However, there were no price stickers attached to the candle packages. At the checkout, the candles rang up for $1.49 each. Total, with tax, came to $3.16. I paid the cashier for my purchase, not giving any thought to the fact I’d just paid more than the posted price. As I was ready to exit, looking at my receipt, I caught the overcharge.

Went to Customer Service, explained the difference in posted price and the scanned price. The gal at the counter said she will refund the difference. I asked “With the bounty?” She said she couldn’t give the bounty “because the law says, in order for you to get the bounty, each item must have a price ticket on it. The candles are not individually marked, we do not owe you any bounty.”

I disagreed, telling her this is a scanner error, and it’s not my fault they didn’t mark the individual candle packages. She offered to “show you the Michigan law, in writing.” I told her, I still disagree with her, but I don’t have time to stand there to argue it, or to read over the law.

I was given a $.64 price adjustment. Still, I think she shorted me on the adjustment, as well as shorted me on the bounty – that is rightfully mine to claim.

Please advise.

Thank you,
Linda

    Dear Linda,

You are correct to disagree with this clerk. You were entitled to the bounty. If you read the Michigan Scanner Law, the store is exempt from pricing 25 classes of items but that does not exempt them from having to pay up when they screw up. Unfortunately, it takes time to get it right. You should have pushed the issue.
