Meijer Offensive Advertising
Posted: 2006-08-11. Categories: Indiana, Meijer

I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana and it is time for the advertisement for school supplies. I think the ad you show of the boy with the pencils up his nose and the boys throwing paper wads around the room is unbecoming of a store like yours, for young children to view. We have enough discipline problems in the schools today and why you would run an ad like that is beyond me. Why not advertise in a more positive way?

I will not shop at your store until the ad is no longer shown on the TV and then maybe I will never shop there again. I realize I am one of millions of your customers so you really do not care. But I do care about the younger generation having to view such gross ads.

Thank you,
R.F.,
Fort Wayne, IN

    Dear R.D.,

I’m posting your letter here, just in case someone from Meijer is reading. Alternatively, you might consider calling them toll free at: 1 (800) 543-3704.

Thank you for sharing your concern, I’m certain that others are also offended by the advertisements. Good for you for speaking up.

    Okay,

I can’t even express in words how much R. D. disappoints me. The Meijer commercial in question, the one that supports the “gross ad” that is apparently corrupting younger generations, is cute and innocent and if the worst thing a kid is doing in school is being bored and sticking two #2 pencils up his nose to the disgust of the little girl next to him then this country is far better than I thought it. Unfortunately, people who…

Okay, this letter is going to become expletive laced pretty quickly if I don’t watch it. Anyways…

Please tell me this is not a real person. This is ridiculous!

God bless America. With people as touchy and complaining as the ones on your site, we’re going to need God’s blessing and a whole hell of a lot more in order to continue to exist.

    Hanging my head in shame,
    Peter

Yes, Peter, I’m afraid the letters posted here are all from real people.

Unfortunately, I have not seen the commercial, so I am unable to comment.

    Thanks for writing!

After reading this trite complaint, Indiana, I found it hard to decide whether to laugh or cry. To me, questioning a commercial such as Meijer’s ad which, admittedly, does portray a little boy with pencils in his nose, is at roughly the same level as calling Rosa Parks lazy.

There are things in life that only the dumbest people could possibly bring to light. Unfortunately, this is one of them. Long live this Meijer ad and please, for the sake of the future, do not try to procreate.

May God have mercy on your soul,
    Jennifer Grans

Ok, I give up! What in the world is going on? I find myself laughing outloud because I had no idea one little complaint such as this one would generate not one but two letters, in the same day even.

I admit I don’t understand how you could compare this ad complaint with calling Rosa Parks lazy. Surely I must have missed something.

    Thanks sharing your opinion!
    Sue
