Good Fast Food

Ok, so everyone knows that fast food isn’t the healthiest choice of food sources but being married to a fast-food-aholic, we do try to make good choices out of our limited options. Such was the case yesterday morning, when we ventured to Jack in the Box for a quick breakfast before we headed home and back to work.

I’ll be honest; my favorite breakfast place is Hardy’s. I simply love their biscuits and gravy; the price is right, the flavor is impeccable and the texture of the biscuits is exquisite. However, since our move back to California, getting there has become a problem, the closest Hardy’s Restaurant is in Davenport, IA; Worth the drive but not very practical.

My second favorite breakfast place – did I mention I’m a breakfast person? – Used to be McDonalds. I really enjoyed their fluffy, light, pancakes and their Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuits, until I found out that they no longer cook their pancakes fresh, they are frozen, then reheated in a microwave oven. When I worked for McDonald’s back in the late 70s, they actually used real eggs, not something poured out of carton.

Since I rarely use the microwave at home, I don’t feel good about my family eating eggs that come from God-only-knows-where and microwave food.

Which is where Jack in the Box comes in. I was happy to find out they use real eggs on their Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit sandwiches but that’s not the best part. I was a little surprised to see these cheesy looking centerpieces on the table. They weren’t anything fancy but it was odd to find them on the table of a fast food restaurant and kind of nice.

You can image my surprise when after we ordered we sat down and a friendly, elderly lady came to our table, introduced herself and offered to get us anything we needed. If that wasn’t enough, she actually brought our food to the table, when it was ready. Most fast food joints these days, just yell out your number and wait for you to come and get it.

We began chatting with this lively senior, who had a thick foreign accent. She was like a breath of fresh air. I began looking around the restaurant and I couldn’t believe just how clean the dining room was. We eat at least weekly at either Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and occasionally at Carl’s Junior. None of them have ever come close to the cleanliness of this Jack in the Box restaurant. Every table that wasn’t occupied was spotless and the floor was very clean.

We’ve all but stopped eating at KFC because we are lucky to find one clean table in the entire restaurant to eat at, even if there are only two or three people dining at the time. The last time we ate there, I actually had to ask someone to clean a table because every single one was not just dirty, but filthy, including most of the seats. I’m sorry but if the dining room is that dirty, I can’t image what the kitchen must look like. That’s a scary thought.

If you like fast food, that doesn’t taste like fast food or get prepared like fast food, I highly recommend eating at Jack in the Box. I especially recommend the one in Sonora if you like friendly service and a clean dining experience. Who said fast food, can’t be good food?

As long as you’re going to Jack in the Box, make sure you give their Monster Tacos a try. I had just come off having a cold (sick for 7 days) and the monster tacos were simply awesome. So good, in fact, that I went back for more four days in a row.

My name is Shawn, and yes, I am a fast-food-aholic.

Yeah, every time I pass Taco Bell, Carl’s Jr, or Jack In the Box. Burger King just “doesn’t do it” for me, and there’s no Wendy’s in sight.

Just as well, if it weren’t for my darling wife, the microwave and The Junction shopping center (where all the good fast food within 60 miles is), I’d starve.
