Sticker Shock

Here is my problem. While on vacation this week, my husband and stopped at the Battle Creek Tractor Supply store on 6360 B. Drive North.

We often stop at Tractor Supply stores while on vacation, since we often find different clearance items that our home store does not carry. My husband came across the clearance sign posted “90 gallon compost bin” the price had been marked down over a course of time to $19.99.

FarmingThe compost drum above it was marked with a yellow clearance sticker for the same amount. I told him I wanted it. He carried it to the checkout and that is when the problem began.

When the cashier scanned it, the compost bin scanned for $149.99. I told the cashier it was on clearance and show him the yellow sticker. He called the manger, who told me it had been mismarked and refused to sell it to me.

The cashier claimed a customer must have put the clearance sticker on it. When I explained there was also a yellow clearance sign under it and my husband went back and brought it to the cashier.

The manager still refused to sell it to me for $19.99.

I thought there was a law that a retailer had to sell an item for the marked price, to the first customer and then could change the price. I used to carry a copy of the Michigan Scanner Law in my purse, but I no longer have a copy of it.

Since the Battle Creek Tractor Supply is not my home town store is there anything other then putting a claim into the home office I can do? I have never used your site before.

You can check out the Michigan Scanner Law for yourself.

I would try complaining to the Tractor Supply Co. customer service, there is a form on their website. If that doesn’t yield results, you can contact the Michigan Attoney General’s office and file a formal complaint.

Just to let you know Tractor Supply in Battle Creek did make it right. They called and agreed to ship the compost bin to the Whitmore Lake store and sell it to me for $19.99. My husband picked it up this morning. Thanks for your help.
