Meijer Sale Prices

Browsing the new Meijer ad in the Sunday paper, I noticed Scott Toilet Tissue and another brand our household likes were both on sale for “½ price.” That’s a great buy!

So Sunday afternoon, I make a trip there especially for that, but picking up a few other things I needed at the same time. I didn’t review my receipt until I returned home. I’m glad I did though, because instead of half price, I got only a 20 cent discount on each item.

Not wanting to make the 5 mile trip back that same day, I stopped the next day on the way home from work. I took a copy of the sales ad, and my receipt to the courtesy desk explaining to the clerk that I’d been overcharged.

She proceeded to correct the error, and gave me a refund for the amount I was overcharged. I politely asked, “under the scan law, am I not entitled to 10 times the difference?” The clerk explained (without missing a beat – she must hear this request often) since the product wasn’t individually priced, only the amount of the overcharge was to be refunded.

Not knowing the law, I didn’t argue, but came home to look it up, where I found your website. What a wealth of information! I’m glad I looked. I rarely check my receipt, unless something is “obviously” wrong, like if I figure I have about $20 worth of stuff in my cart and my bill is $30 or more. I’ll certainly pay more attention from now on, especially when shopping at Meijer.

And since they wouldn’t honor the scan law, instead found a loophole around it, I think I’ll be sending them a bill for my mileage. Gas is anything but cheap lately, and if I had to make a return trip to the store to get my entitled refund, I figure I can bill them for the gas used to get me there. My company pays $0.489 per mile these days. That seems like a fair price!

I’ll get nothing from them of course, but it’ll make me feel better, and the laugh will be worth the cost of the 37 cent stamp! Thanks for the information!

    Dear Lorie,

Thanks for sharing your shopping story. It really is important these days to check those receipts every single time you shop. The money you save, could be your own.

They did not find a “loophole” as you stated, the actual price point has to be on the item or the shelf label where the item is located. % off the retail is only entitled to the differance, NOT the bounty.
