I have been on a quest for chocolate and not just any chocolate — but chocolate with sea salt. First I have to tell you about the very best caramel I’ve ever tasted. They are called “Bequet Gourmet Celtic Sea Salt Caramels” and let me tell you, they are incredible.
The caramels have this salty after-taste and the caramel just melts in your mouth. It’s buttery and smooth; you won’t be able to eat just one. That’s for sure.
Back to my Chocolate & Sea Salt…
I tried the Lindt Dark with a touch of Sea Salt. The chocolate is creamy and smooth, but there really is just a hint of Sea Salt. I didn’t throw it away or anything like that, but I don’t think I’ll buy any more of them either.
Then I tried Dark & Sea Salt Caramels by Ghirardelli which were surprisingly good. Though I will note without exception that the caramel has sort of a burnt taste to it. The sea salt was absolutely wonderful. It was just the right mixture of sweet and creamy with the gooey caramel and the texture of the sea salt. It tasted like a party in my mouth with all those flavors — even the burnt taste was good.
So far, my all-time favorite is Salty Dog Chocolate Bar by B.T. McElrath. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. The chocolate was smooth, and it didn’t over-power the salt. What was surprising is the salt. They actually shaved the salt and coated the bottom of the bar. So, not only do you get the flavor but you get the texture and it’s like have a 3D experience for your mouth.
I have one more here at home called Hammond’s Sea Side Caramel. I finally tried it tonight. I have to say it is velvety and smooth, the milk chocolate melts in your mouth and the rich taste of caramel leave your mouth in heaven. But there isn’t even a hint of the taste of sea salt. What a disappointment.
So far hands down it’s the Salty Dog Chocolate Bar but I’ll keep looking.
Do you like chocolate and sea salt? I would love to hear about your favorites.
