It’s been a long time since I was part of the workforce. I help my husband a little but by and large he carries the ball. I’ve been talking to people and frankly I’m appalled at the things employers are getting away with these days.
One gentleman that I know works for a local market – a union market – you expect it to be a good job, with benefits; all the nice things the union is supposed to do for you. He tells me he hates the job, he’s worked their maybe two or three months and he hates it because the company not only screws employees out of their benefits (after an injury, when you need them most), but you can’t even plan ahead for holidays because the schedule for the holiday isn’t posted until Friday at 5:00 p.m.. So making any kinds of plans for, say…the Memorial Day weekend…are simply out.
To add insult to serious injury, the job only pays $8.75 an hour and he gets to pay union dues on top of that (CA minimum wage is $8/hour).
Then, I’ve got this friend in Arizona and he works for one of those big box stores. They have a rotating schedule where he gets to come home tonight at 11:30 p.m. and turn around to be back to work at 6:00 a.m. What in the world are they thinking? I mean if I want to kill a bunch of employees off, that is exactly how I’d do it. He’s going to get maybe 4 hours of sleep and then drive on busy highways on a holiday weekend to get to work. It’s just not safe.
Aren’t there laws against this? Who is protecting workers rights? Is the economy so bad that employers can get away with treating our laborers like those in third world countries? I think we can do better. Employers are not being fair to workers.
Of course when you have companies like Monsanto as a glowing example of how to operate a business, I guess the other companies feel they can do it, too.
I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. We are having guests and will be entertaining at home. I hope no deer are injured this weekend. Please remember to stop and smell the flowers — they sure are beautiful this time of year. Remembrances go out to all our fallen soldiers.
