I’m sure by now you’ve all read the headlines: “Ben & Jerry’s switching to non-GMO ingredients” but not so fast. I think that’s wonderful. But something just didn’t feel right. You know how you just know when something is wrong but you can’t put your finger on it? That’s the feeling I had.
So, I decided to dig a little deeper.
This should have been my first clue. You really have to pay attention to what you read.
“Ice cream manufacturer Ben & Jerry’s has committed to switching to all non-GMO ingredients in its ice cream products by the end of this year.”
Notice is does not say the ice cream will be non-gmo, just the ingredients.
Read down a little farther, and they make it sound so good.
The company uses cane sugar instead of beet sugar and high fructose corn syrup, which are derived from GMOs. The St. Albans Cooperative Creamery in Vermont supplies the bulk of rBGH-free milk for the ice cream. All flavors are fair trade certified, which requires they are non-GMO and produced using sustainable methods.
Those cows may not be getting hormone injections but they darn sure are on GMO feed. How can they make these claims? Because we, the consumers, are stupid and we let companies get away with this kind of thing.
I’ve probably only had Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream once or twice in my entire life. I can guarantee you that I will never have it again. This is a company you can’t trust. Isn’t anybody looking out for the best interest of consumers?
It used to be that companies wanted to please the customer and provide the best quality merchandise possible, in order to keep them coming back. Not any more. They want to make their products as cheaply as possible and will cut corners, and even deceive the customer. It’s wrong and I refuse to be a part of it.
Most groceries carry organic ice cream, not just non-gmo ice cream, for about the same price as Ben & Jerry’s anyways. Get the real deal or better still make your own ice cream! We bought a Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker and it makes wonderful frozen dishes. It’s fast and easy! It even comes in colors so you can match your kitchen. 🙂
Tell Ben & Jerry’s to take a hike! Don’t buy milk from GMO-fed cows. It’s simply not healthy.
