Make a difference!

Don’t you ever wonder how Walmart’s low prices and low wages translates into billions of dollars in profits? Every time you shop at their stores, you are making a decision, a vote of confidence in your food.  You are what you eat, it sustains us and makes us healthy or sick.

This isn’t a diatribe about Walmart. What I want to talk about today is knowing where your food comes from. Oh, but there goes those low prices. Farmers are no different than the rest of us, they deserve to be paid for the work they do. We are finding out just how important our food is and it will become more important as the years go by because our soil is depleted of nutrients.

It isn’t that one McDonald’s Cheeseburger will kill you, it won’t most likely. But consume a steady diet of those same cheeseburgers and your family will be visiting your grave but not before you’ve make several visits to the medical community.

Our bodies were made to care for themselves. They are designed so that if we give it plenty of fresh food, sunshine, hard work and plenty of rest, our body can heal itself. It is a marvelous machine that no one has been able to duplicate.

So, what’s going on? It’s the perfect storm.  The minerals have been depleted in most of our farm land. They have added GMO’s to our food, our body doesn’t quite know what to do with them.  Add pesticides, herbicides, hormones, household chemicals in shampoo, window cleaner, artificial additives to our food and you have a perfect recipe for disaster.

The stuff is cumulative in our system, meaning that these chemicals build up in the body until they reach overload then we become sick with cancer or other illnesses. You can’t fool mother nature. The stuff we are eating looks like food, tastes like food, but it’s simply not food your body recognizes.

US Food Companies Have Removed Food Dyes in the UK—Why Not Here?

…interestingly, Kraft, Coca Cola and Wal-Mart have already removed these artificial food colors and dyes from the products that they distribute in other countries. They’ve reformulated their product lines in other countries and no longer include these food dyes, and they did it in response to consumer demand and an extraordinary study called the Southampton Study.

The Southampton Study was unusual in that it not only tested an overall number of six dyes (three of them are used in the US (Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6) and the other three are used in the UK) but also the combination of two ingredients: tartrazine (yellow #5) and sodium benzoate. The study’s designers knew that a child very rarely has occasion to ingest just a synthetic color orjust a preservative; rather, a child who is gobbling up multicolored candies is probably taking in several colors and at least one preservative.

What’s amazing is that in the U.K., the federal food safety agency actually funded the Southampton Study that led to even U.S. corporations eliminating synthetic colors and sodium benzoate from their U.K. products. [read more…]
